Please Introduce yourself, what is your name, business name, where you are from?
My name is Elizabeth Smith (aka Liz to most!) and I am the owner and founder of The GURU Co based in |Norfolk England.
What is your business about?
My business is about ‘you’, my fellow human beings! G.U.R.U with the focus on developing and growing you as a person and an individual. I work with people who know there is more to life, who seek to unblock their blocks and not accept the default position is fete accompli! I offer bespoke Personal Development Coaching packages to support my clients in creating possibilities by opening up new thought processes to take them to their finest moments and mastery of their own minds and destiny. My mission is to offer students the opportunity to open new avenues of growth and I do this through my online courses and group training’s covering topics such as introductions to Neuro Linguistic Programming and onwards to certificated training’s and registrations with the INLPTA (International Neuro Linguistic Programme Training Association), Self-worth and courage.
What made you get into this line of business?
I have been a Registered Mental Health Nurse for many years working in numerous roles and environments. I worked with many people during my career who have become so shut down by their negative thoughts and experiences. Suffocated by the lack of freedom or perceived choice in their lives and developed such a limited view of their futures it had resulted in them being referred to the Mental Health Services.
I have an absolute passion and belief in the human minds and its ability to expand and achieve the most unbelievable results. I stumbled across NLP more than 10 years ago when I was working in General Practice settings. I was using traditional approaches based including the medical model which means medication and became very despondent with the response and outcomes I was seeing.
I discovered NLP quite by accident and from a very strange source, which is why I am totally convinced by the saying ‘when the student is ready, the teacher appears’. My journey took me to Courses in Norfolk, Suffolk and finally qualifying as a Trainer of NLP in North Yorkshire. The changes in my personal life were remarkable and to those patients and clients I was working with, beyond words.
The techniques transformed my practice, my expectations of individuals and in turn we had astonishing breakthroughs. The creation of my business allows me to work creatively through coaching with a vast range of clients in all walks of life and I love it!
What makes you get up and go in the morning, do you have a morning power routine?
My reason for getting up in the mornings is so simple…I love life and I love making a difference. It may sound a little gushy but I actually find people and the human race fascinating, so I count myself very lucky to have a job I love. I am inspired by the people I meet and those I work with so I very rarely find getting out of bed difficult.
I certainly do have a morning routine which is loosely based on The Miracle Morning process. I am an early riser so I start with, Silence / meditation I incorporate this with ‘Ha’ breathing. I learnt this breathing technique about 7 years ago and it comes from Hawaiian roots. It is amazing for clearing that groggy feeling in your head, replenishes the oxygen in your brain. I the use positive affirmations visualising my goals and it’s a simple as that, I listen to my audio book or a YouTube podcast whilst I put my face on.
What is the best advice you have ever been given?
This is a tough question because I think there have been many influencer’s in my life but if I had to pick one think it would be to remain at all times curious….This advice has helped me in many areas but especially when coaching people. By remaining curious you ask different questions rather than making a judgement. It is most often this curiosity which allows me and a client to delve deep into alternative thinking processes or challenge old beliefs, practice new strategies to move forward in life.
What is a book you would say everyone must read?
I think the book of choice for absolutely anyone who is interested in their personal development and growth has to be The Peaceful Warrior. I believe it was a film but I’ve not seen it, however I do love a book because I can build my own frames of reference, turn the corners down to mark something of importance!
Does your business have any offers on at present or coming up?
Yes! In the autumn I am running a ‘FREE’ Seminar in Norfolk to introduce people to Neuro Linguistic Programming. I am working on it at the moment and looking for a beautiful venue where the delegates can relax and absorb new learnings….they will never be the same again! I will be advertising this on my business page on Facebook and on my website.
What One thing do you do to change your mindset instantly?
Now this is easy and anyone can do this…I change my body language. Take note of when you are feeling doubtful, shy, fearful, unhappy, angry; notice your posture the tilt of your head and where you are breathing from. All of this is signally to your brain that something is wrong. Change this to mirror the mindset and feeling you want to project such as head up, long breaths, shoulders down and hands relaxed…experience the change!
What do you love most about helping others?
I love to be of service. The experience of adding value to anyone’s life and world is enormously humbling experience which is extremely difficult to describe in words. I would like to say it is altruistic but it really isn’t I get so much personal pleasure and buzz from seeing people absolutely blossom and achieve things they really didn’t believe they could.
Your favourite quote?
My favourite quote is directly from the NLP which is ‘what’s possible for another, is possible for me’
