Please Introduce yourself, what is your name, business name, where you are from?
Hi, I am Nicola Parker and I created Headstrong Fitness and I am from Manchester.
What is your business about?
Ever felt like despite it all that you were doing well. You were on the right path, your life was heading in the right direction? Then BAM!
This was me. Despite a difficult breakup from my mentally abusive and controlling ex I was coping. I was learning to be a single mum to three young children. I got myself to college and was now in my third year of uni studying law. I was doing damn good at it too. I had also met a new partner. On paper, I had it all, sort of.
But then it all came to a head. I’d let things build up for years. Many many years. And now I found myself in hospital after a serious suicide attempt. How had this happened? Have you ever felt like your life just spiralled out of control and you couldn’t even see it happening?
I’d heard of depression and being mentally unwell. But that was an excuse for serial killers, right? WRONG! I was suddenly dealing with an illness that was so highly stigmatised and something I didn’t want to be part of.
I had a choice. I could let it consume me. Or I could figure out what is going on and how best to deal with it. Yes, I had my moping and wallowing and I think that is needed. But then my Dr kept telling me about exercise and how helpful it would be. It took me a while but eventually I listened to him.
So, to cut a long story short. I quit university, trained as a personal trainer and embarked on a long and never-ending journey of self-development and mindset work.
I am now a mental health personal trainer and I help others like myself with mental illnesses to become stronger than their mind. I run a mental health support group where daily as a tribe of like-minded women we come together to become who we truly are meant and want to be. We uplift and support each other. It’s not like the typical mental health groups on Facebook. We work together at improving our mental health. I combine all my expertise such as; counsellor, mindset coach and qualified personal trainer to bring a holistic approach to our mental health and bridge the gap the NHS leaves behind. I also bring in guest experts too and together we conquer so many imperative topics that will overall help us all in becoming stronger than the mind.
What made you get into this line of business?
My own personal battles with mental health.
What makes you get up and go in the morning, do you have a morning power routine?
My power routine would consist of:
Immediately write in my gratitude journal which I have at my bed side.
Meditate before getting out of bed (just a short 5-10 min one)
Exercise – to get my happy hormones pumping for the day ahead.
What is the best advice you have ever been given?
Its ok not to be ok.
What is a book you would say everyone must read?
Awaken The Giant Within by Tony Robbins
Does your business have any offers on at present or coming up?
At the moment we ae ready for the Self Esteem Workshop that starts on the 10th September 2018. It’s a one-off investment of £30 to finally get to grips on the self-esteem that has been holding you back. I have brought in a guest expert for this workshop too, so you are getting double trouble!
What one thing do you do to change your mindset instantly?
A workout if I can. If not I go to my happy place, I think of happy memories or people who make me happy. For me, it’s a memory with my children.
What do you love most about helping others?
It helps me to feel like I have a purpose in my life. It gives me a sense of achievement and that all my pain and suffering hasn’t been for nothing, that there is a positive outcome that can come from it.
