Ellie Jackson

  1. Please Introduce yourself, what is your name, business name, where you are from?

My name is Ellie Jackson and I am a children’s author, beach cleaner, environmental campaigner and mother of four young children. I write children’s books for primary and preschool children about the problem of ocean plastic and inspire them to get involved in helping their communities to tackle the issue.

2.What makes you get up and go in the morning, do you have a morning power routine?

As a mother of 4 little ones, I am still in the throes of early morning starts yet as a self-employed mumpreneur I am up often up working late. This naturally leaves me with several challenges – mainly lack of sleep, chaotic routine and stressful mornings. My children have adapted beautifully to this way of life, mainly because it suits them to ignore everything I ask and leave everything until the last minute at which point I am glad for the peace and quiet when they are finally off to pre-school and school. This is the time where I can get most of my creative work done and I relish the empty house to focus on my work.

3.What made you get into this line of business?

I have always had a strong love for nature and the environment, studying Environmental Science at University and then going on to teach Geography at secondary school. It is only recently however after writing my true books on ocean plastic, that I have developed my passion for campaigning and raising awareness amongst others.

4.Your favourite quote?

It is a famous quote “Do what you love and  you will never work another day in your life” that has finally found resonance with me after many years of battling in jobs I have not been truly inspired by. The books have brought all of my interests into one place as I am combining education, nature and children into one and I now have such strong motivation to see these reach as many children as possible.

A lot of my time is spent visiting schools and delivering free assemblies – I have spoken to over 10,000 children in the last year, doing a book reading and follow up discussion. There is nothing more fantastic for me to see than a whole hall full of 450 children all cheering for paper straws and beach cleans. I firmly believe that our best chance in helping save our planet from the many environmental challenges we are facing is to educate our children and therefore I would recommend everyone to use these books to teach and encourage the next generation before it is too late.

5. Does your business have any offers on at present or coming up?

I have just released my third book, Nelson’s Dangerous Dive about a humpback whale who gets trapped in ghost fishing nets and this now completes my set of three books on ocean plastic. I have three more exciting and true stories which will be released in 2019 where the focus will shift to consider the issues of palm oil, pesticide use and climate change.

6. What makes you get up and go in the morning, do you have a morning power routine?

I am incredibly lucky to live by the sea in beautiful Cornwall where there are so many people in the beach cleaning and conservation community that by surrounding myself with these local heroes I find amazing inspiration for the books and to reach out into primary and preschools. If I am ever feeling like a change in direction or if I need a break I head out into nature for a walk either on the beach or along the river, usually ending up picking up plastic along the way.

7. What do you love most about helping others?

The knowledge that I can do something to help tackle the issue, even if it is just a few pieces of rubbish, helps me to focus on what is important and reminds me that our individual actions can collectively make a difference. I love the quote “A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step” or as I like to say “To clean the ocean of plastic starts with picking up just a single piece.”

Emma Bowyer

  1. Please Introduce yourself, what is your name, business name, where you are from?

Hi I’m Emma and I’m from Cheshire but now live on Waiheke Island just off the coast of mainland Auckland New Zealand. I have been here 14 years and love it. I have 3 beautiful children Mr I’m a Ninja 7 and 3-year-old twinadoes.

I am a copywriter Emma Bowyer-The Word Whisperer NZ and am working on developing my own writing and blogging into my full time business. I have had a couple of articles published this year  and  launched my blog  Don’t Put Peas Up Your Nose written from the point of view of my twins all about the things they do and the silly big people getting in their way.

  1. What is your business about?

Writing a funny and light hearted blog that will make other mums roll their eyes in recognition and laugh snort at some of the crazy antics the twinadoes and their brother get up to. Occasionally I’m allowed to chip in but that’s not that often usually I’m just a figure to be ridiculed or escaped from.

20180511_123033.jpg

  1. What made you get into this line of business?

I regularly perform comedy and improvisation, with the occasional bit of stand up thrown in. When my kids came on the scene I couldn’t stop talking about them and realised they were comedy gold after telling a few stories friends about their antics like when my 9 month old daughter threw herself out of her cot to escape the tedium of nap time and gave herself a black eye, and they told me I should write that stuff down, so now I do.

  1. What makes you get up and go in the morning, do you have a morning power routine?

I get up as soon as my alarm threatens to ring and slide out of bed like a SAS sniper to get to the bathroom and into the shower before my twinadoes realise it’s morning and start screaming for me and if I don’t move quickly enough tearing their room to pieces. Then if I’m really winning I have time to make a quick cup of decaf tea (I know I’m a saint)  lol. Before the morning wars begin.

20180216_200206

  1. What is the best advice you have ever been given?

To ask myself when I’m stressed and at freak out point (so that’s about 23 times a day). Will this matter  in 5 years or even 5 months time? Will I even remember it? And if not to ‘Let it Go! Let it Go!’

  1. What is a book you would say everyone must read?

For all pregnant Mummas I’d say you have to read  Up the Duff: The real guide to pregnancy it is hilarious and full of fun facts by Kaz Cooke

For twin Mummas the incredibly useful book

‘What to do when you’re having two’ by Natalie Diaz

20181031_162139(0).jpg

  1. Does your business have any offers on at present or coming up?

If you subscribe to my Don’t Put Peas Up Your Nose list I’ll be your best friend forever and promise never to share your secret ‘Mum guilts’ with anyone else. Unless you ask me to and then I’ll drink tea and eat chocolate with you till you feel better.

  1. What one thing do you do to change your mindset instantly?

I stop and breathe and think how incredibly blessed I am to have my  three wonderful kids. Unless it’s because of them driving me mad that I need a mindset change, then it’s ‘thank God I’ve got my secret stash of chocolate hidden in the cupboard’.

  1. What do you love most about helping others?

Seeing people smile. That’s why I write my blog to help other twin mums that might feel isolated and alone. If I can help them see that yes it is a really hard job being a twin Mama but it’s also the best club in the world to belong to. And that the funny side is always there, you just have to recognise it. Even if your 3-year-old twin daughter is caught hanging out of her bedroom window instead of napping and you have to call the fire brigade. True story. I can laugh now.

  1. Your favourite quote?

‘Life is like a box of chocolates you never know what you’re gonna get’. Forrest Gump And in my case that was after multiple IVF treatments finding out I was having twins! Shocked? I couldn’t speak for about 2 hours and for me that’s saying something.

Thanks Emma for sharing your business and story with us if you would like to see more from Emma please go to Wordwhisperer Website or Her Blog

Katie Silverthorne

  1. Please Introduce yourself, what is your name, business name, where you are from?

I’m Katie Silverthorne. I was born in London but I now live in Portishead, just outside Bristol – which I ADORE. My business is Memory Zoo.

2.What is your business about?

At Memory Zoo we make keepsakes for people from their precious clothing to help then remember a special person, event or time in their lives.

28059282_10156363073456189_2565814448082662150_n

3. What made you get into this line of business?

I started the business entirely by accident. I made a keepsake bear for my daughter when she was about 1 as I couldn’t bear to put all her beautiful baby clothes into the attic and never see them again. I wanted a more visual reminder of her baby years so used her clothes to make a bear. I put pictures of her bear onto Facebook for my friends to see and very quickly people started asking the question, ‘Can you make me one?’ And Memory Zoo was born.

4.What makes you get up and go in the morning, do you have a morning power routine?

Eggs! I get up and eat three scrambled eggs for breakfast. Everyday without fail. I don’t have a more complex routine than that! Although after I drop my daughter at school I usually go for a run (health permitting) – even just a few km – which really gets my blood moving, brain functioning, stress out of my system and my whole being ready to work. I am a little grumpy if I miss my run!

28958440_10155093420236396_6710800178531532800_n

5. What is the best advice you have ever been given?

I have two things that have always resonated with me. The first is, ‘People massively overestimate what they can achieve in a year but massively underestimate what they can achieve in a decade.’ This helps me to remember that everything doesn’t have to happen right now this minute! And working towards a big goal does take years. There’s no such thing as an overnight success. Everything that we have ever done and every decision we have ever made have led us to this point in time. I aim not to waste a single moment of my life and my learning.
My second one is the acronym – F.A.I.L. – First Attempt In Learning. I LOVE this and hold it dear to me when my crazy ideas don’t work out or take root the first time. I put them down, refresh the vision and try again. Everything is about learning. I aim to be a better person tomorrow than I am today. When I am lying on my death-bed I do not want to look back and think, ‘I wish I had been braver.’

6.What is a book you would say everyone must read?

I have so many books that I love! Can I have more than one please?! ‘Sapiens’ by Yuval Noah Haraji; ‘Real Artists Don’t Starve’ by Jeff Goins and ‘Still Live With Woodpecker’ by Tom Robbins. The last one is one of my favourite books of all time and was given to me by a complete stranger on a train when I was 17. I should also mention ‘Pyramids’ by Terry Pratchett. This was the first book that I actually chose myself (wasn’t told to read by an adult) and I laughed so hard I cried. I realised in the moment of reading it that I would have a life long love affair with books, writing and words.

7.Does your business have any offers on at present or coming up?

I don’t have any offers but I will be releasing some new products very soon so keep your eyes peeled to see what they are. I don’t ever discount my Memory Zoo keepsakes as each one is a bespoke, hand-made item and people have to join a waiting list to get them. The waiting list is currently 7 months long and growing constantly! I do offer a £5 discount though to everyone who orders two animals at the same time. There is also no waiting list if you would like to have something made in honour of someone who has passed away. I understand how instrumental the keepsakes can be for dealing with grief and it’s unrealistic to make people who are suffering emotionally to wait such a long time for their keepsake.

37984088_10156845803466189_6918664952001593344_n

8. What one thing do you do to change your mindset instantly?

RUN! That is my go to. If I can’t do that then I listen to motivating songs, take the dog for a walk, do some jumping jacks or stand in front of the mirror and give myself a motivational speech! Really! 😀 Sometimes I feel that I need to have a gentler word with myself and in those moments I shower myself with loving words. I allow all pain, grief and illness to pass away from me whilst I bask in the feelings of self acceptance and love. I am also deeply keen on personal affirmations.

9. What do you love most about helping others?

It’s such a honour to have been trusted to make so many hundreds of keepsakes over the years for so many people, in many different situations. Many of those people are having a keepsake made because they have lost someone dear to them and the clothes they are giving me are the last reminders of that person. It’s a joy to be able to help people process their grief and loss through my skills.

10. Your favourite quote?

‘When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on.’ Franklin D. Roosevelt

Sophie Coltburn

1.Please Introduce yourself, what is your name, business name, where you are from?

My name is Sophie Coltburn, I am the founder of Mindsoulness and I’m from South coast UK.
2. What is your business about?

Mindsoulness is about using our mindset to heal and help ourselves and others. To manage things like anxiety, overwhelm and procrastination, to increase our success in our relationships and businesses and most importantly to experience more joy in our lives. We look at all types of methods of mindset work, from the very practical and physical, to the more esoteric and spiritual.
3. What made you get into this line of business?
I come from a professional career in Graphic Design. I was set on that path from age 15, but after a couple of years in the industry I suffered a huge loss in our family and it shifted my perspective on everything. It took me a few years of trying different companies and design roles to realise that office/employee work really wasn’t for me and I couldn’t stay feeling so trapped every day.
I started listening to podcasts and videos by people like Tony Robbins, Lewis Howes, Marie Forleo and Tim Ferris and learned about being an entrepreneur. I craved more freedom and wanted to do something that lit me up and allowed me to do more in my life.
Mindsoulness seemed to be a seed of something planted in my mind one night and it’s taken me a few years of hard work to understand what it is. I know it’s bigger than me, which can be daunting, but exciting at the same time.
4. What makes you get up and go in the morning, do you have a morning power routine?
I don’t really have any issues getting up in the morning now that I don’t have to go to an office! I also work at home with my husband so we tend to just get up and have breakfast together before starting work.
5. What is the best advice you have ever been given?
I don’t know if you’d call it advice, but there are a few core things that have helped me massively these past years.
1. Practice gratitude daily. It makes ALL the difference to your mindset and health.
2. Every moment is a new moment to start fresh.
3. You are the co-creator of your life. Take responsibility and recognise excuses for what they are.
6. What is a book you would say everyone must read?
Oh thats tough. I often recommend “You are a Baddass” and “You are a Badass at Making Money” by Jen Sincero
7. Does your business have any offers on at present or coming up?
I have a couple of openings for working on mindset with me 1:2:1 and I’m in the process of creating a course around managing anxiety and overwhelm.
8. What one thing do you do to change your mindset instantly?
I think gratitude is one of the key things. Anytime I start slipping into negative thoughts that aren’t useful for emotional processing*, I think of things I’m thankful for and focus on the feelings of joy and gratitude.
* some negative thoughts can be processed and helpful to heal, but many are just fear getting in the way.
9. What do you love most about helping others?
I love seeing the changes that happen so fast. I’m always blown away by the speed at which the ladies I work with change their mindset, attitude and consequently their lives.
10. Your favourite quote?
“Change your thoughts and you change your world” – Norman Vincent Peale

Carol Moses

My name is Carol Moses and 9 months ago after spending most of my adult life as an actress. I became my own boss when I set up PORTOBELLO TOM. I want to give you a quick insight as to why Portobello Tom exists and why I now make affirmation bracelets alongside my European charm bracelets.

My story:

A West Londoner through and through, I grew up near Portobello Road where as kids we used to call jewellery ‘Tom’ hence the name Portobello Tom.

My mother was a ‘gym slip mum’ and too young to handle the responsibility of raising a child so my grandmother brought me up as her own with her 3 boys on a little estate in Latimer Road, West London. I’m telling you this because I want you to get an understanding of my relationship with my gran. She was my everything and I didn’t really know how to love anyone else on that kind of level until I had my first child, Akira.

16 years ago, my grandmother suddenly passed away from throat cancer even though she had never smoked a single cigarette in her whole life, go figure.

3 weeks after my grandmothers sad passing my mother and uncles decided they were going to the Caribbean to sort out my grandmother’s affairs (she had spent the last 10 years of her life living on her home Island of Dominica).

There was no question as far as I was concerned, Akira and I were going with them. Now, Akiras dad didn’t want her to go but I was adamant, she was going with me. We were going to be celebrating her 3rd birthday in Dominica and in a funny way it gave the family something to look forward to whilst there. I struggled with the guilt of that choice for years.

5 days into the trip, 6 weeks after my grandmother passed, 2 days before her 3rd birthday Akira contracted meningococcal septicaemia and died within 24 hrs of the symptoms appearing.  On February 4th 2001, my life fell apart and it has taken 16 long years to try to pull the pieces together, but pull them together I have.

Now, my story is not about how cruel life is but rather about how strong we human beings are. How amazing the human spirit is. In the pursuit of happiness and healing I’ve discovered many things. I’ve discovered happiness is a right for all.

That includes me and you. It sounds obvious, but it was something I forgot whilst battling the depression and alcohol abuse that came about as a result of losing Akira. I just didn’t know how to cope. I went into free fall, I lost my self-confidence, my faith and my long-held belief that life was supposed to be enjoyed.  When my beautiful, intelligent, spirited daughter passed away life stopped making any sense.

Over the years I found much attention was given to the victims of meningitis and the disease itself and rightly so by the way. But there is another side of the story. There is the family that is left behind when a person passes away. Aunties, uncles, siblings, grandparents, cousins and most importantly parents who now have to find a way of living the rest of their life rather than just existing as I did for many years.

We have to find a purpose, a reason to carry on breathing and living. We must remember how strong we are. Unlike most people I had to find a reason to be happy rather than just being happy. So, you see, I had to rediscover my amazingness as a matter of survival.

We are all going to go through pain at some point, but as long as we believe and hang on in there, we will always come out the other end of our journey stronger. This is why I have created the JOURNEY range. Initially I thought I was creating something specifically to reminded those who had been left behind that they are strong. That they are amazing, because walking through the fire of grief is not easy. It takes superhuman strength at times, but we can do it and come out the other end feeling blessed to have had our loved ones in our lives, no matter how short that time was.

But it has turned into a lot more, because everybody and I mean everybody needs reminding at some point of how strong they are. Not only those who have suffered bereavement but anyone who has been through, a rocky patch, anyone who has had to overcome, anyone who needs reminding they are a hero for carrying on, anyone who needs to be told to carry on because they are worth it and worthy.

The main charms I use on my Portobello Tom ‘JOUREY’ bracelet and what they represent:

I put a tree of life charm on there to remind the wearer that life is forever growing and that they are rooted to something bigger than just themselves. We are connected to a life source we must remember that.

Then there is the teardrop charm, it symbolises the tears you have cried. All stories of strength have a tear or two involved. But those tears did not stop you from moving forward. You have got from there to here. Yes, you may cry again but it will always be ok not to be ok for a time. You will make sure you get up, you will find the strength to keep moving forward…you always have.

I’ve also added a reminder to revel in your playful side in the presence of a child-like charm on the JOURNEY bracelet. Your laughter is important, the world needs it. Did you know smiling gives off positive energy? Smile.

Finally, I have a musical note or treble base. This is to remind you to talk your truth, your voice is important. When I went through my trauma I lost faith in my own voice. Everyone else’s opinion held more weight than my own, even when it came to dealing with my own life. However, we are all entitled to our own opinion and to travel our Journey as we see fit, and that’s what the musical note represents.

I will be donating 10% of the profits from the ‘Journey’ affirmation bracelets to Meningitis Now.  When I needed help in the early days of my daughter’s passing, when I just couldn’t see a future with me in it they were there for me so now I want to what I can to give back in some way.

Here’s to a wonderful life.

Thank you so much for sharing your story with us if you would like to see more from Carol please go to Facebook or Instagram

Natalie Christine Dattilo

1. Please Introduce yourself, what is your name, business name, where you are from?

My name is Natalie Christine Dattilo. I have a PhD in clinical & health psychology. I am the owner and president of Priority Wellness Group and currently live in Boston, MA. I am also the incoming Director of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston.

 2.What is your business about?

Priority Wellness is a women’s health psychology practice. We offer psychological treatment and health coaching for individuals using a mind-body approach as well as consulting for companies and healthcare organisations interested in supporting the mental health and wellness needs of their employees.

3. What made you get into this line of business?

I have always been curious about human behaviour and why people do what they do, so studying psychology was a natural fit for me. I love helping others better understand themselves and assist them in leading their most productive and happy lives.

Natalie Christine_2

4. What makes you get up and go in the morning, do you have a morning power routine?

I try to start each day “on my terms,” so to speak, and begin by setting an intention for the day. I usually wake up around 4:30 to workout, meditate, and drink my coffee. It’s hard for me to imagine starting the day any other way. My children are usually up by the time I’m done and I’m a much better mom when I am exercised and caffeinated.

5. What is the best advice you have ever been given?

Trust in the process and the results will come. I’m a very goal-oriented person but sometimes tend to focus too much on the outcome and not enough on the process. I’ve learned over time that while the destination is important, the journey is really what matter most.

6. What is a book you would say everyone must read?

There are so many books I love, but the one that I have been recommending lately is “Mindset” by Carol Dweck. It was a game changer for me.

Natalie Christine_4

7.Does your business have any offers on at present or coming up?

We are currently recruiting participants for online mental resiliency training program called BODYmind Boot Camp. It’s an intensive 6-week, rapid-result, action-oriented, group-based stress-reduction training program designed for women to help manage or prevent symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress and burnout.

8. What One thing do you do to change your mindset instantly?

Take a breath and focus on the present moment. I remind myself that everything is as it should be. During difficult times, I challenge myself to find the lesson and be grateful for it.

9. What do you love most about helping others?

I love helping people develop greater self-awareness and insight into themselves and why they do what they do. I love helping people get “unstuck.” The magic happens when they start putting real changes into effect by taking action and experiencing life differently, and in a way that is truly and powerfully fulfilling. I love hearing people’s stories, hearing about their lives, what they overcame, and what they hope to accomplish. Then I love watching them make it happen.

10. Your favourite quote?

Melissa McDaniel

  1. Please Introduce yourself, what is your name, business name, where you are from?

Hi! My name is Melissa McDaniel and I am the Founder of Love, Melissa Ann and the author of  “Who will love me? A holistic approach to building meaningful relationships after sexual assault.” I was born and raised in the beautiful state of Washington. After a few international travels and a graduate degree on the East Coast I have made my way back to my home state.

  1. What is your business about?

I am a Personal Empowerment Coach who supports women in moving beyond a life of loneliness and isolation and into a life of meaningful relationships after sexual assault. Drawing from my own transformational experience, I give women the tools- and permission- to heal in ways they never knew were possible. Together we laugh, cry, and most likely will say a few WTFs on her journey to lovingly take back her power, trust her inner voice, reconnect with her body, and build meaningful relationships.

  1. What made you get into this line of business?

After being sexually assaulted I found myself continuously wondering, Who will love me? I felt as if I was living two lives, the one I thought I needed to portray and the one I hid behind closed doors. Never fully connecting with others because I did not feel I had the ability to be my true authentic self. As I transformed my life from loneliness and isolation into a life of abundant relationships I was called to help others sexual assault survivors do the same. When they ask the question, “Who will love me?”  I always let them know, Melissa Ann does and will.

  1. What makes you get up and go in the morning, do you have a morning power routine?

Ha… so typically my rabbit, Gypsy, wakes me up around 5:30 a.m. trying to burst out of his cage for a morning dance party. Once we dance, tea is made and one of my favourite guided meditations is turned on. Gypsy is also a fan of meditation and joins in the morning ritual most days. After the meditation I go about showering, eating, etc.  Hanging on the back of my front door are my weekly affirmations. I recite each affirmation out loud before I leave the house. One of my favourites right now is, “With love, I will make the difference I am destined to make.”

  1. What is the best advice you have ever been given?

Once I had someone say to me, “Melissa, has anyone ever told you, you are enough? Sitting in an empty room, bare ass naked, doing absolutely nothing, you are enough.” At that moment the biggest weight was lifted off my shoulders. Wait?! What?! I can be doing nothing and still be considered enough?! For years I masked the pain of being sexually assaulted by becoming an extreme perfectionist and overachiever.  One more academic degree, one more country travelled to, one more failed hobby would surely cure the pain. This new idea of, “I am enough,” helped me to heal on a deeper level and love myself fiercely.

EmilyWenzel_Melissa-McDaniel-Headshots-2018_IMG-0012.jpg

  1. What is a book you would say everyone must read?

This is such a tough question for me. Books are my life.  If I have to pick just one I would say Paulo Coelho’s the Alchemist. It reminds me of the beauty and magic that happens when you trust your inner self. Knowing to follow your own personal journey, even when the path is less travelled.

  1. Does your business have any offers on at present or coming up?

Currently my book, “Who will love me? A holistic approach to building meaningful relationships after sexual assault.” is available for pre-order on Amazon for $.99. Amazon

  1. What one thing do you do to change your mindset instantly?

Such a great question! Lately, when I need a mindset change instantly I have been using the affirmation, “I choose to see love instead.” It helps bring me back to the real reason we are doing this thing called life, to love and be loved.

  1. What do you love most about helping others?

To me, the best part about helping others is the ripple effect that occurs. Seeing women go on to fiercely love and support other women on their journey to healing after sexual assault is beautiful.

  1. Your favourite quote?

“It took me quite a long time to develop a voice, and now that I have it, I’m not going to be silent.” Madeleine Albright
